Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently shared insights into what he considers the biggest mistake of his career. During a podcast interview, the 40-year-old executive described his most significant error as a “political miscalculation” that he feels has spanned two decades. Zuckerberg expressed that Facebook has spent considerable time apologizing for content moderation challenges that, according to him, were beyond the company’s control.
“There were claims about what we were supposedly doing or responsible for that I don’t actually believe were accurate,” Zuckerberg explained. “In political issues, you have people who are genuinely trying to address a problem and others who are simply looking for someone to blame.”
Tech Crunch reports that Zuckerberg was likely referring to criticisms aimed at Facebook for its role in Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory. At that time, it was alleged that Cambridge Analytica used Facebook user data to sway voters towards Trump, and there were also claims of foreign interference via the platform. This controversy led to significant negative press and required Zuckerberg to testify before Parliament.
Zuckerberg admitted he regretted not being more vocal about the pressures from the US government during that period. He noted that he has since found a better balance on political matters and pledged to “push back” if similar issues arise in the future.
